Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsA person who types "eye doctor near me" at lunchtime is a different buyer from a person who types "buy daily contacts cheap". The first wants a chair, a time and a plan that is accepted. The second wants a box in the mail. Google Ads can fill an exam schedule, but only if the account is built to tell those two people apart. This page explains how we structure campaigns for an optometrist, which keywords and exclusions matter, how health-advertising limits shape what an ad can say and how we connect spending to appointments that were actually booked.
Advertising for healthcare services comes with extra rules on the platforms and, in many states, from the optometry board or consumer agencies. We do not quote those rules here, because they differ by state and change. Where a limit matters, we say so, and we ask you to confirm wording with your board or compliance advisor.
Start with the schedule
An optometry practice has a fixed number of exam slots, and most of the unfilled ones are predictable. Tuesday afternoons may run light. A new doctor who joined last month may have open mornings. A second location may be quiet while the flagship is full. Before we write a keyword for an optometrist, we ask where the empty chairs are, because that decides what the campaign is for.
If the book is full for six weeks, a broad exam campaign mostly creates a waiting list and irritated callers. In that case the better use of search ads is a narrow one: a service you want more of, such as contact lens fittings, dry eye evaluations or pediatric exams, or a location that needs patients. If the schedule has room, a core campaign for comprehensive eye exams in your towns is the first build. The optometrist's own economics, meaning what a typical new patient is worth over the years they stay, decide how much to spend. We help you work that out from your numbers and do not apply benchmarks from other practices.
Campaign structure
| Campaign | The patient behind the search | Example searches | What the landing page needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Comprehensive eye exams | An adult overdue for a checkup or needing a new prescription | eye exam near me, optometrist in your town, eye doctor accepting new patients | Insurance list, hours, online booking and a map |
| Contact lens exams and fittings | A wearer who needs a refit, refill authorization or a first fitting | contact lens exam, contact lens fitting near me, astigmatism contacts | What a fitting involves and a way to request a time |
| Pediatric exams | A parent booking a first or school-year exam | pediatric eye doctor, kids eye exam, child vision screening versus exam | Child-friendly photos, ages seen and parent-focused copy |
| Dry eye and comfort | Someone with gritty, tired or irritated eyes | dry eye treatment near me, dry eye evaluation, eye strain from screens | Plain-language explanation of an evaluation, no promise of relief |
| Myopia management | A parent worried about a child needing stronger lenses each year | myopia management for kids, kids nearsightedness control | A careful description of the program and what an evaluation covers |
| Medical eye care | A patient with red eyes, a possible infection or a monitoring need | eye infection doctor, pink eye treatment near me, glaucoma monitoring | Scope of what you treat, same-day policy and emergency guidance |
| Optical and eyewear | Someone ready to choose frames | glasses near me, designer frames local, lens options for progressives | Frame photos, lens options and a link to book the exam first |
| Brand | People searching your practice name | your practice name, doctor's name plus reviews | Hours, booking and the current insurance page |
A one-doctor practice may start with only two or three of these. Each campaign should have its own budget, its own landing page and its own conversion counts, so you can see which service is filling chairs.
Keywords and intent
Searches for an optometrist or eye doctor carry a lot of local and insurance intent. "Eye exam that takes my plan" and "same day eye doctor" are real buying signals. So is a plain "optometrist" with a town name. Phrase and exact match versions of those terms usually give the cleanest control at the start, with broader matching added later once the account has booking data and a long list of negatives. We read the search terms report weekly in the first months, because it shows how patients describe their problem, and those phrases often turn into FAQ content or new service pages on your site.
Some searches look similar but behave differently. "Eye doctor" and "optometrist" are both used by patients who may or may not know the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist. If your optometrist office does not perform surgery, ad copy and landing pages should say what you do treat, so that people looking for surgery do not click and bounce. A visit for a medical problem, such as an irritated eye, may be billed to medical insurance rather than a vision plan, and a patient who does not know that often searches both ways. Saying which plans you take, in the ad and on the page, saves a wasted click on both sides.
We keep the generic phrase from eating the budget. An optometrist near me search is valuable, but it is also the most contested, and an account that starts there learns little. Specific searches such as a contact lens exam or a pediatric eye doctor teach us more, and they tend to be easier to match with a landing page. Once an optometrist account has a record of booked patients from the narrower terms, the generic phrase gets a measured test.
Negative keywords
Product shoppers
Terms such as order contacts online, discount contacts, cheap glasses online and coupon codes come from people shopping for a product. Unless you sell and ship lenses, exclude them. Review before excluding, since some searchers want a local pickup.
Career seekers
Optometrist salary, optometry school, optician apprenticeship, technician jobs and continuing education come from students and job hunters, not patients.
Home remedies
Home remedy, natural cure and eye exercises searches signal a person who does not plan to book. Some could convert, so check the term report before removing a whole family.
Out of scope
If you do not perform laser or surgical procedures, exclude those terms so the ads do not appear for them. A referral relationship is worth describing on a page, not in a paid ad for the procedure.
Competitor names
Branded searches for other offices are expensive and often against your goals. We decide with you whether competitor terms are worth any budget at all.
Wrong patient
Searches for animal eye care show up in broad matches more than owners expect.
Health-ad guardrails
Google has policies that apply to healthcare and medical services, and some health categories carry extra restrictions on targeting or require certification. We read the current rules before launch and again when a campaign is edited, because they change.
Copy such as "Is your dry eye getting worse?" speaks to a person's health as if the platform knew it. We write ads around the service and the practice, such as "Dry eye evaluations in your town, appointments available", and keep the second person out of health claims.
No cure, no "perfect vision", no promise that a program will slow a child's nearsightedness, and no claim that a treatment works for everyone. The doctor describes what an evaluation can find, and the ad stays at that level.
Some states regulate how eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses can be priced in ads, and how offers are described. Before any price or "free exam" line goes live, the practice confirms the wording with the optometry board or a compliance advisor.
Visitor lists built from health-related pages can run into privacy rules for covered practices. We plan tracking with your privacy officer or attorney, and we do not upload patient lists without that review.
Calendar
| Time of year | Why it matters in eye care | How the account can respond |
|---|---|---|
| Late summer | Back-to-school exams, pediatric visits and sports vision interest | Raise the pediatric budget, add parent-focused ad copy and open more weekday afternoon slots in the ads |
| Autumn | Benefit renewals are on people's minds and the year-end rush starts | Mention plan acceptance early, prepare booking capacity for the push |
| November and December | Many patients want to use remaining vision benefits and flexible-spending balances before they reset | Increase budget on exams and eyewear if you have openings, and keep the accepted-plans page current |
| January and February | New benefit periods begin and resolutions bring exams back | Run exam and contact lens campaigns with fresh plan information |
| Spring | Seasonal allergy symptoms send people looking for comfort and red-eye care | Test medical eye care ads in the towns where you handle these visits |
| Early summer | Sunglasses and outdoor eyewear browsing | Support the optical shop with local ads that lead to a store visit or an exam booking |
These are general patterns we discuss with practices, not measurements. Your own appointment data and your plan mix will show what is true in your town.
Landing pages and booking
The ad promises an exam, so the page should be about an exam. We send each campaign to a page built for it, and we avoid dropping everyone on the home page. An optometrist's comprehensive exam page covers what the visit includes in plain terms, who is booking (adults, families, contact lens wearers), the plans you accept, the hours and a booking tool that shows real openings. If the online scheduler lags or shows slots that are already taken, patients give up quickly, so we test it on a phone before the campaign starts.
Mobile matters because many optometrist searches happen away from a desk. Someone with an irritated eye or a broken pair of glasses is looking at a phone. A call button near the top, the address with directions and a clear note on same-day availability make the difference. If you cannot see urgent patients, say so and point to emergency care. For anything that sounds like sudden vision loss, a chemical splash or an eye injury, the page should tell people to seek emergency care right away, not wait for an appointment. That line should be on the urgent-care ad landing page, even if it feels awkward in an advertisement.
Measurement
The main count
A completed online booking or a call that ended with a time on the calendar is the signal we want. Page views and clicks are only supporting information.
Phone leads
Call tracking shows which campaigns produce calls and how long they last. A call about insurance acceptance is different from a call to move an appointment, and we review a sample with your front desk to tell them apart.
Who actually accepted
We ask the front desk to note whether callers had a plan you accept. If too many do not, we adjust copy and exclusions to be clearer about plans.
Booked versus seen
A patient who books and does not arrive is not revenue. If your practice tracks no-shows, that data lets us compare campaigns more honestly.
Who the ads reach
Existing patients booking through an ad is not the same as a new patient. When your system allows it, we separate them so the budget is judged on new patients.
Rhythm
| Item | How often | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Search terms | Weekly at first, later every few weeks | Add negatives for product shoppers and job seekers, note new patient language |
| Ad text and extensions | Monthly | Keep hours, plans, holiday closures and doctor changes accurate |
| Location and schedule reports | Monthly | Shift spending toward the towns and hours that produce appointments |
| Booking tool and call handling | Monthly test | Place a test booking and sample calls to catch broken steps |
| Review with the practice | Monthly | Compare the optometrist ad account with the appointment book and decide what to push next |
Pricing
Questions from practice owners
Management is $895 a month for Google Ads alone, $1,595 with a second platform and $2,295 with three. Ad spend is separate and paid to the platform. There is no setup fee and no contract, so you can stop if the numbers do not make sense for your practice.
Some searches come from product shoppers, which is why we build exclusions for online-ordering terms from the start and review search terms often. We also write ads that talk about the exam and the fitting, which discourages someone who only wants a box of lenses.
Maybe, but price and discount claims are regulated in some states, and the rules differ. We will not publish a price line until you have confirmed the wording with your optometry board or a compliance advisor. This is not legal advice.
No. Health-related targeting is limited on the major platforms, and we would not want to imply that we know a person's condition anyway. We target by location, search intent and the service you offer.
No. We measure with booking and call data that do not require patient health details. If you ever want to use a patient list, we would first review privacy rules with your compliance contact, and we do not do it by default.
Perhaps, in a narrow way. A full book argues against a broad exam campaign. It may argue for a specific service, a second location or a day with openings. We would rather tell you that than spend your money.
You do. The account is in your name with your billing, and we manage it. If you leave, the history stays with you.
